Statement about the closure of Northbridge OOSH

Posted: Thursday, 16 May 2019

Willoughby City Council was informed yesterday that Kids Capers Out of School Hours (OOSH) care would close at the end of this school term (July 5). We understand parents are concerned about how this will impact their families. We were in touch with school principals yesterday and today and we have communicated directly with parents, where possible. Information will be provided to families by principals and via Council’s social media channels.

Key points

  • Kids Capers hires Council’s Warners Park community facility and hosts children from Willoughby, Northbridge, St Phillip Neri, Neutral Bay and Cammeray public schools.
  • Kids Capers indicated that increased competition from providers at Cammeray and Neutral Bay primary schools affects the viability of their service.
  • Northbridge Public and St Phillip Neri are the only primary schools in our local government area without an onsite OOSH.
  • Kids Capers citing the cost of the Warners Park facility as a reason for the closure of service is misleading as they have only received CPI increases to their hire fees during their tenure at Warners Park.
  • Kids Capers requested a reduction in their hire fees from Council in January. This was rejected because they’re a commercial hirer and not eligible for a concession.

Officers will work with the affected Northbridge schools to source an interim solution. We believe there will be other local OOSH providers who can assist.

Council will also advocate for a longer-term solution. Ideally, an OOSH onsite at one of the Northbridge schools would be best.

Northbridge Public is very concerned about the effect of the closure of the Northbridge OOSH on parents. The school is speaking to providers about the feasibility of providing OOSH onsite at the school. Council have approached an OOSH provider who has indicated an interest in continuing an OOSH service for the affected schools.
