Heritage & Conservation

Within the Willoughby area there remain valuable examples of our history in the form of buildings, subdivisions and streetscape. There are Federation, Georgian and Victorian cottages, inter war bungalows, and post World War II architecture. Some stand alone, but in some places there are whole streets that retain their original character. These are places that are important to keep for the future. Not only are they pieces of the past, but they also contribute to the character of Willoughby City.

Outstanding items or areas that need to be preserved are either Heritage Listed or made a Conservation Area.

Places that are Heritage Listed or form part of a Conservation Area are more restricted in the kind of developments and alterations that can take place, but there are other benefits for owners which can actually make their land more valuable.

If you would like more background to heritage in Willoughby there are seperate pages on architecture, arts and entertainment, peopleplace and other resources.

Willoughby City Council has awards to recognise outstanding design work in keeping our historical places maintained. The Heritage Awards were last held in 2006.

Willoughby's Aboriginal Heritage is also valued and protected by Council and the Aboriginal Heritage Office.

There is also a Natural Heritage Register.
