Walking Tracks

There is a  Map of Tracks in Willoughby that will give you an overview of all walks in the area. The descriptions below will help you chose a suitable walk. Maps are available from Willoughby City Council, or you can contact the Bushland Team on 9777 7755 for maps and more information.

Artarmon to Middle Harbour

Grade: Easy-medium (some steep parts)

Distance: 3.5km one way

This walk begins at Artarmon Railway Station and follows Flat Rock Creek Valley through Artarmon Reserve, Bicentennial Park and Flat Rock Gully Reserve to Middle Harbour. Along the way you can read stories and see photos of historical interest on large poles.

Explosives Reserve Walking Track

Grade: Medium (some steep steps)

Distance: 3km

The entrance to this walk is opposite 42 Cammaray Road in Castle Cove. This walk is divided into two circuit sections and passes through some of Sydney’s most untouched bushland areas. It consists of open woodland and ridge-top heathland with some partial views of Bantry Bay. The reserve’s original purpose was to act as a buffer zone for the explosives kept in Bantry Bay.

North Arm Walking Track

Grade: Medium (some steep sections)

Distance: 4.5km one way

It is possible to tackle a section of this track rather than the whole route. This track links H.C. Press Park in Castle Cove to the Harold Reid Reserve in Middle Cove. It passes through some lovely harbour-side bushland.

Sailors Bay Walking Track

Grade: Medium (some steep steps)

Distance: 1.5km return

The track reveals a hidden waterfall and beautiful sandstone rock formations.

Walter Burley Griffin Walk

Ferndale Park Walking Track

Distance: 2km return

The walk travels along the fern-clad Swaines Creek. Although tucked away behind the suburban streets, the walk shows a quiet and peaceful side of Chatswood.

Railway to River Walk

Grade: Easy to medium (some unsealed tracks and steps)

Distance: 3.5km one way

This is a 3.5km walk from Chatswood Train Station to the Lane Cove River. It passes through streets, gully rainforests, woodland and riverside plant communities. Just follow the signs and discover the beauty of Chatswood and Chatswood West. Sturdy shoes are needed.

Blue Gum Reserve Walking Tracks

Grade: Medium

Distance: 5km return

This walk begins in Chatswood West and finishes at Lane Cove National Park on the other side of Lady Game Drive. The return trip includes walking along Kooba Avenue in Chatswood West. This walk features the remains of the Blue Gum High Forest that once covered the North Shore ridge where the Pacific Highway now runs. Blue Gum High Forest is listed as an endangered ecological community.

Garadi Track

Grade: Medium

Distance: 1.2km (approx 30 minutes)

This Aboriginal heritage walk takes you through cultural sites in Mowbray Park.

Mowbray Park Walking Track

Grade: Medium (some steep steps)

Distance: 2.5km return

Mowbray Park is a beautiful bushland corridor along the Lane Cove River. You can see the mangroves from a boardwalk, and check out sandstone caves. Keep your eye out for animals!

Harold Reid Foreshore Walking Track

Grade: Easy to medium

Distance: 3.5km one way

This circuit takes walkers through the waterfront bushland of Middle Harbour. Expect fantastic views, diverse plant communities, wildflowers, and lots of birds.

Griffin Federation Track

Grade: Easy to medium (some steep sections of bush track)

Distance: 2km one way

While travelling through Warners Park and the streets of Northbridge, this track links two of Walter Burley Griffin’s creations; the Castlecrag Estate and the Willoughby Incinerator.

Wreck Bay Walking Track

Grade: Easy to medium

Distance: 2km return

This track starts at the western end of Dorset Road in Northbridge. The track winds around the southern end of the Northbridge Golf Course where you can see the wrecks of the ships Itata and Cobaki. The walk finishes at the golf course; please go back along the way you came, do not walk onto the golf course.

The Round Willoughby Walk has been broken down into smaller sections and loop walks to provide more convenient options. Galuwa Inyun Bulga

Distance: 1-1.5 hours

This Aboriginal heritage walk retraces the footsteps of the Camaraigal through Flat Rock Gully.

Flat Rock Gully Walking Track

Grade: Medium

Distance: 4km return

There are several ways to get into Flat Rock Gully, but there is a car park near the Small Street entrance. The track is slippery when wet and has some steep sections and creek crossings. If it has been raining, the creek crossings may not be passable. Flat Rock Gully covers around 10 hectares, and is rich in natural and cultural heritage.
