The Save Power Kits provide tools and information to help you make your home more energy efficient. The Save Power Kits can:

  •  show you what uses the most power in your home
  •  provides hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly estimates

What are some simple ways to save energy?

  • Switch appliances off at the power point instead of leaving them on stand by mode.
  • Buy energy efficient appliances that have a good energy rating - the more stars, the more efficient.
  • Check the seals on your fridge to make sure they’re tight. Close the fridge door on a piece of paper half in and half out of the door. If you can pull the paper out easily you may need to replace the seal.
  • Wash your clothes in cold water and make sure you have a full load before switching the machine on.
  • Hang your clothes out to dry instead of using the dryer. If you do use your dryer, spin the clothes in the washing machine first and clean the dryer’s lint filter to improve the air flow which will maximise its efficiency.
  • Hand-wash your dishes in the sink or make sure you have a full load before using the dishwasher.
  • Only use air conditioners when necessary. The temperature of a cooled room in summer should be about 23 to 26°C. Close curtains over windows to keep the heat out and the cool in. By making some simple changes around the house, the average Australian family can save at least one tonne of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
