Cycling

A group of cyclists

Cycling is a great way to keep fit, reduce your impact on the environment and is often a faster way to travel than other modes of transport.

Willoughby City Council is committed to promoting and providing for cycling within Willoughby. A number of shared and dedicated cycle paths have been constructed throughout the area, with more planned to be implemented in the future in accordance with the Willoughby Bike Plan. The Willoughby Bike Plan is intended to provide a plan to meet Council’s aims of increasing the modal share of cycling, reducing the impact of private motor vehicles on the region and promoting greater levels of community health. The Bike Plan has been developed in accordance with RTA guidelines and includes a cycle network consisting of 27 new routes. These routes are being implemented in stages in accordance with the priorities identified by the Bike Plan. You can download a copy of the  Proposed new cycleways in Willoughby - 235 KB or the entire  Willoughby Bike Plan Report - 1,856 KB.

The Willoughby Council Bicycle Consultative Committee provides a forum for riders to make plans and discuss issues with Councillors and Council staff. It meets once every six weeks, and gives Council advice on facilities and design. Resident suggestions for cycling infrastructure improvements and requests for bike racks are welcome and can be made by contacting Council’s Transport Planner on 9777 1000.

News - Epping Road Cycleway now open

The new shared path along Epping Road between Lane Cove and North Ryde is now open, providing improved facilities for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport. The completion of this link provides a 7.5km continuous cycleway from North Ryde to Naremburn and connects into a number of links to Willoughby Council’s existing bicycle network at Mowbray Road, the Artarmon Industrial Area, Bicentennial Reserve and Naremburn. The cycleway provides a suitable cycling route for commuter and recreational cyclists alike, safely separated from traffic. For more details on this route please see the Commuting to Chatswood map below.

Cycling Events

Every year Council hosts a number of events to promote cycling in Willoughby. Council also supports Bike Week and Ride to Work Day which take place from September onwards. Please check back later for information about Council's participation in these events in 2009.
