Ceremonies where residents become Australian citizens are regularly hosted by Willoughby City Council in the Council Chambers. Each new Australian citizen participates in a personal ceremony and is presented with a certificate, a photograph of the ceremony, and a small memento of the occasion. Families and friends are invited to attend the ceremony and enjoy the light refreshments which follow.
The Council Chambers are fully accessible for wheelchairs and prams.
Information regarding Australian Citizenship may be obtained from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs website or by phoning 131 880.
Becoming an Australian citizen gives you a number of rights such as voting and the ability to leave and re-enter Australia, but also comes with responsiblities such as obeying Australian laws and defending Australia if the need arises. There are eligibility requirements, an application process, an interview, and then the ceremony.
Willoughby Council arranges the ceremony, but can only perform the ceremony for people whom the Department of Immigration has approved. Please lodge your request for citizenship with the Department, not with Willoughby Council.
