WILLOUGHBY CITY COUNCIL IS UPGRADING VICTORIA WALK

The Chatswood CBD is going through an exciting period of change with the construction of the new Chatswood Transport Interchange and the soon to be commenced Civic Place creating a modern city with commercial, retail and cultural vitality as a centre piece on the North Shore.

The Chatswood Mall is the backbone of the CBD linking the residential, commercial, retail, cultural and transport areas.

The Chatswood Mall created in the early 80’s is tired and in need of a complete makeover which is in keeping with the sophistication of the city being created. This Masterplan proposes to rejuvenate the Chatswood Mall and re-launch it as Victoria Walk providing a catalyst for a fresh and revitalised city centre with all of the colour, festivity, warmth, zeal and delight that is the Willoughby community.

VICTORIA WALK MASTERPLAN

The new masterplan establishes the mall as vibrant café retail hub connecting the Interchange with Civic Place and surrounding mixed use precincts, generating a vibrant yet simple ‘stage’ where people can meet, gather and people watch. In addition to the ‘base layer’ urban space, lighting choreographs a series of ‘moments’ that engage with the changing rhythms of the Mall day and night.

KEY IMPROVEMENTS

  • Street furniture, light poles and café seating has been streamlined to provide increased clear paths of travel
  • Outdoor dining areas are clearly defined as a consistent line of furniture, fixtures and trees
  • Existing cafe lease areas have been maintained and designated areas have the flexibility to incorporate future outdoor dining opportunities
  • Improved solar access within the mall, existing trees have been replaced with a line of trees along the southern side. The northern side of the mall is currently heavily shaded from the adjoining built form and the removal of trees will also assist in reducing the visual clutter
  • A centralised, underground trench for the provision of power and water to market stalls, and as a provision for future uses
  • The new level platforms provide enhanced vantage points and improved sightlines between the eastern and western ends of the mall
  • Cross flow movement has been restructured and provided for at regular intervals
  • The new cube seating is arranged to achieve a relaxed and intimate gathering spaces for individuals and groups
  • The central performance space is retained and opened up to accommodate for various community activities, the space is serviced with power and lighting in an integrated and concealed manner
