Goal – Environmental campaigns to promote change, improve the health of the environment and increase community involvement
|
Streets to Creeks
By making the community aware which creek, river or bay stormwater and rubbish from their home will flow into, people will be more careful about what they let wash away. Residents will learn the easy things they can do to prevent pollution. There are aerial photo catchment maps, pollution awareness brochures, community projects such as drain stencilling, walks and talks to let people know what catchment they live in.
The Sailors Bay project conducted in the first term of e.restore will now be expanded to all catchments, including the Lane Cove River, Flat Rock Creek, Sugarloaf and Camp Creeks and Scotts Creek sub-catchments.
Community Environment Support
Environmental initiatives and projects with community groups and schools such as environmental interpretive tracks, biodiversity projects, sensory tracks, wildlife gardens and environmental audits in schools will increase environmental awareness and involvement.
e.restore will give out five $3000 Enviro-Grants a year for schools and community groups to use in developing and implementing their own environmental projects.
The annual photography competition will continue, as will other projects like the Mowbray Park aboriginal interpretive project, and other interpretive signs, exhibitions and public displays.
Education For Sustainability Plan
This plan directs Council’s environmental education activities, and considers social and economic issues as part of the big picture. The idea is to get everyone – the community, schools, local business and council officers – informed and active in moving Willoughby towards sustainability. A major education project is Sustainability Street.
