Buildings can be more than structures performing a function. They can be beautiful, comforting and inspiring places, with a significant place in history and in the minds and memories of the people who use or live around it. Much of this comes from good architectural design; when function, aesthetics and people come together.
Willoughby still has private and public property with value from design and preserving it so it can keep providing pleasure and value to the community is an important challenge. Protecting and maintaining architectural heritage often falls to the owners, so Willoughby Council has provided further incentives and inspiration to invest in heritage property. These include the Heritage Awards to recognise great heritage-aware architectural work, and the design guidelines to give owners who want to maintain or recover their properties original condition.
There is more information on development involving heritage items and conservation areas.
