Air Quality

In the Sydney metropolitan area, photochemical smog caused from vehicle exhausts and particle pollution (brown haze) from dust, dirt, smoke and liquid droplets are two of the biggest pollution problems.

Mowbray Public School monitoring station

Willoughby City Council has an operational ambient air quality monitoring station located at Mowbray Public School. The monitoring station was installed in early 2006 to monitor local air quality. This area was chosen due to the possible effect on local air quality from the proposed Lane Cove Tunnel (pre-and post-commissioning).

The monitoring station is managed by Heggies on behalf of Council and shows real time monitoring results of Particulate Matter (PM10 & PM2.5). See the real-time results below.

The Lane Cove Tunnel was opened in March 2007.  The tunnel consists of two ventilation stacks: one at the western end, in the Lane Cove West Industrial Park in Sirius Road; and one at the eastern end, in the Artarmon industrial area, between the western end of Marden Street and the Pacific Highway.

The operators Connector Motorways, must meet air quality goals both inside and outside the tunnel and publish the hourly real-time monitoring results on their website.
